Drum & bass does not have a secret set of notes, and no minor key guarantees a professional bassline. Producers often favour minor tonalities because they support tension, darkness, emotion and cinematic movement. The practical skill is understanding how scale notes behave musically and how their frequencies behave in the sub range.
This guide starts with F natural minor, explains the most useful scale degrees, and builds a simple bassline that works as music rather than a random sequence of “in-key” notes.
What is a minor key?
A key is a family of notes organised around a tonal centre called the root. In F minor, F feels like home. Other notes create different amounts of stability and tension in relation to it.
The F natural minor scale contains:
F – G – A♭ – B♭ – C – D♭ – E♭
On a piano roll these are F, G, G-sharp/A-flat, A-sharp/B-flat, C, C-sharp/D-flat and D-sharp/E-flat. DAWs may prefer sharps even when traditional theory spells the key with flats. The MIDI notes sound the same; the flat spelling shows how the scale is constructed.

The most useful scale degrees for bass
- Root (F): maximum stability and the clearest statement of the key.
- Minor third (A♭): strongly communicates the minor mood.
- Fourth (B♭): creates forward movement and works well as a call-and-response destination.
- Fifth (C): powerful and stable; useful for jumps, turnarounds and upper bass movement.
- Minor seventh (E♭): adds tension and often leads naturally back toward the root.
G and D-flat are equally valid, but they create more specific colours. G can feel like an upward push, while D-flat has a darker, suspended quality. Start with root, third, fourth, fifth and seventh, then introduce the remaining notes because you hear a reason for them.
Why F minor is practical for bass music
F1 has a fundamental frequency of approximately 43.65 Hz, which sits in a powerful sub region on capable systems. It is low enough to feel deep but high enough to remain more reproducible than extremely low fundamentals around 25–30 Hz. This does not make F minor “best”; it simply makes the root useful for many sound systems.
Octave labels differ between DAWs and plug-ins. One system may call the same MIDI pitch F1 while another displays F0. Trust the audible pitch, MIDI number and analyser rather than the printed octave name alone.
Useful F-minor sub frequencies
- F: about 43.65 Hz
- G: about 49.00 Hz
- A♭: about 51.91 Hz
- B♭: about 58.27 Hz
- C: about 65.41 Hz
- D♭: about 69.30 Hz
- E♭: about 77.78 Hz
These values describe one useful sub octave. Moving a note up an octave doubles its frequency; moving down halves it. The higher scale notes may approach the upper edge of your intended sub range, so you might drop them down, shorten them, or let a mid bass state the melodic movement while the sub remains simpler.

Build a first F-minor DnB bassline
Create a two-bar MIDI clip at 174 BPM. Use a clean sine sub and begin with rhythm before pitch complexity.
- Place F on the first beat to establish the root.
- Leave a deliberate rest around part of the kick pattern so the low end can breathe.
- Answer with A-flat to reveal the minor character.
- Use C as a stable upward jump near the end of the first bar.
- Begin bar two on F again, then use E-flat as tension before returning home.
- Repeat the pattern and change only the final note or rhythm every four or eight bars.
The note order could be summarised as F – A♭ – C / F – E♭ – F, but the rhythm, octave and duration determine whether it feels like DnB. Short syncopated notes can feel urgent; longer held notes create weight. Copying the pitches without the groove will not reproduce the musical effect.
Make the mid bass more expressive than the sub
Your mid bass can use octave jumps, passing notes and pitch movement that would make the sub inconsistent. For example, the mid might rise from F to C while the sub holds F, or perform a quick G-to-A-flat movement while the deepest layer plays a shorter root note.
This creates a useful separation of jobs: the sub communicates weight and the mid communicates character. They do not need identical MIDI at every moment, but any difference should be intentional and harmonically compatible.
Natural, harmonic and melodic minor
F natural minor uses E-flat. F harmonic minor raises that note to E natural, creating a stronger pull back to F. The interval between D-flat and E natural has a dramatic sound that can suit cinematic or Middle Eastern-influenced phrases. F melodic minor raises both D-flat and E-flat while ascending in traditional theory, though modern electronic music treats these colours more freely.
Do not switch scales because the names sound advanced. Begin with natural minor. Introduce E natural only when you want its strong leading-note tension. If a sample or chord contains E-flat while the bass uses E natural, listen carefully to whether the clash is expressive or accidental.
Writing bass against chords and samples
“In key” does not mean every scale note works under every chord. If the harmony is F minor, the notes F, A-flat and C are stable chord tones. Over D-flat major, D-flat, F and A-flat are stable. A sustained sub note can alter how a chord feels, so listen to the combined harmony rather than checking scale highlighting alone.
Imported vocal and instrumental samples may drift in pitch or contain notes outside the detected key. Use a tuner, spectrum analyser and your ears. If the sample’s tonal centre fights the bass, transpose it, choose another bass note or embrace the tension deliberately.
Why some notes feel louder
Equal MIDI velocity does not guarantee equal perceived bass level. Your room, headphones, speakers and processing respond differently to each frequency. A limiter may also react more strongly to particular notes. Check the full scale through your bass patch and adjust sound design, note octave or gain only where the musical phrase needs it.
Do not automate every note to the same analyser height. Musical emphasis matters. The goal is controlled intention, not a visually flat line.
Common theory mistakes
- Using every scale note simply because it is highlighted.
- Ignoring rhythm and expecting pitch selection to create groove.
- Putting very low notes beneath the useful range of the playback system.
- Changing the sub melody constantly and losing a stable tonal centre.
- Assuming a detected sample key is always correct.
- Forcing every layer to play identical notes even when their roles differ.
Your F-minor exercise
- Write an eight-bar pattern using only F and rests.
- Add A-flat in one response phrase to establish the minor quality.
- Add C or E-flat near the end of a phrase to create movement.
- Duplicate the MIDI to a mid bass and create one octave variation.
- Check every note against the kick and a suitable reference track.
- Transpose the complete pattern to E minor and G minor. Notice how the sub balance changes even though the intervals remain identical.
