A strong drum & bass arrangement feels as though it is always moving toward the next event. That movement is rarely accidental. Most tracks use recognisable groups of 8, 16 and 32 bars, giving DJs dependable phrasing while giving listeners enough repetition to understand an idea before it changes.
This guide explains how those phrase lengths work at a typical 174 BPM, how to turn a loop into a complete track, and how to analyse professional reference tracks without copying their musical identity. Treat the bar counts as a framework rather than a law: the purpose is to make your decisions intentional.
What does a bar mean in drum & bass?
Most drum & bass is written in 4/4 time. One bar contains four quarter-note beats, even though the broken drums and syncopated bass may make the groove feel more complicated. At 174 BPM, one bar lasts about 1.38 seconds. Eight bars last roughly 11 seconds, 16 bars about 22 seconds and 32 bars about 44 seconds.
These lengths matter because dancers, DJs and experienced listeners begin to anticipate change at phrase boundaries. A new hi-hat after eight bars, a fill before bar 17, or a full drop after a 32-bar build feels satisfying because the change arrives where the musical sentence naturally turns.
The hierarchy: 4, 8, 16 and 32 bars
- Four bars: a small idea, drum fill, call-and-response unit or automation movement.
- Eight bars: a complete phrase. Add or remove one supporting element to maintain motion.
- Sixteen bars: a substantial section or half-section, often with a clear development at the midpoint.
- Thirty-two bars: a full musical chapter such as an intro, extended drop or breakdown-and-build sequence.
A beginner mistake is to change everything every four bars. That creates activity but not necessarily direction. Keep the main identity stable, then use smaller changes to signal progress: a percussion layer, a bass response, a reversed sound, a one-beat silence or a fill. The listener should still recognise the section after the change.

A practical beginner arrangement
The following structure is a useful starting point for a club-oriented track. It is not a compulsory template, but it prevents you from being trapped in an eight-bar loop.
- Bars 1–16: DJ-friendly intro. Establish atmosphere, rhythm or a recognisable motif without revealing the complete drop. Make the pulse easy to understand.
- Bars 17–32: intro development and build. Introduce stronger drums, tension, vocal clues or bass foreshadowing. Reduce energy immediately before the drop if you want the impact to feel larger.
- Bars 33–48: first drop, idea A. Present the clearest version of the groove. Avoid showing every variation in the first four bars.
- Bars 49–64: first drop, idea B. Change the bass response, drum detail or lead phrase while preserving the core identity.
- Bars 65–80: breakdown. Remove weight and create contrast. Develop melody, atmosphere or narrative rather than leaving an empty gap.
- Bars 81–96: build and second-drop preparation. Reintroduce rhythm and increase expectation. A shorter 8-bar build may be enough if the breakdown already created tension.
- Bars 97–128: second drop. Return to the strongest idea, then earn one meaningful switch, variation or added layer.
- Bars 129–144: outro. Remove lead elements and leave clean rhythmic material for mixing.
How to choose a useful reference track
Choose a reference because it solves the same arrangement problem, not simply because you love it. A liquid roller, a neurofunk track and a dancefloor anthem may organise energy very differently. Match the reference to your intended subgenre, approximate BPM and listening context.
Use two or three references with different jobs. One might demonstrate pacing, another low-end balance, and another the amount of contrast between breakdown and drop. This stops a single track becoming a blueprint for your musical choices.
Reference-track workflow in Ableton Live
- Drag a purchased WAV or other high-quality file onto a dedicated reference channel.
- Turn Warp off when the reference already matches its intended playback speed. If you need bar alignment, confirm the detected downbeat and avoid unnecessary time-stretching.
- Route the reference so it bypasses your mastering chain, or use a monitoring system that lets your mix and reference reach the same final listening path.
- Turn the reference down until its perceived loudness is close to your unfinished mix. A mastered track will otherwise win every comparison merely because it is louder.
- Place locators at every major change and write down the section lengths. Note what changes at 4, 8, 16 and 32-bar boundaries.
Do not only mark where the drop begins. Record when the first clear drums arrive, when the bass is previewed, where fills occur, when a vocal disappears, and how long the track waits before repeating its main idea. Those details reveal the arrangement logic.

Build an energy map
Create a simple scale from one to five and rate each 8-bar phrase. One might be sparse atmosphere; five might be the fullest drop. Your track does not need to rise continuously, but the sequence should make sense. If every section is a five, the listener loses the ability to feel impact. If the track remains at two for too long, attention fades.
Arrangement is controlled contrast. Energy can change through density, register, rhythm, stereo width, brightness, silence and familiarity—not only by adding more sounds. Removing the kick for half a bar can create more anticipation than another riser.
Common arrangement problems
- The eight-bar loop never develops: duplicate it to 64 bars, label four 16-bar blocks, and make only one structural decision per block.
- The drop feels predictable: keep the hook but vary the response, drum fill or final two bars of each phrase.
- The drop has no impact: reduce low frequencies, drums or stereo density immediately before it.
- The breakdown loses attention: let it reveal musical information rather than simply muting the drums.
- The second drop feels pasted in: preserve one familiar anchor while changing one important relationship.
Your arrangement exercise
- Choose one suitable reference track and map every 8-bar phrase.
- Create empty locators for a complete arrangement before editing your loop.
- Move your strongest loop to the first-drop marker.
- Work backwards to create an intro and build that foreshadow it.
- Work forwards to create contrast, return and an outro.
- Listen from beginning to end without touching the mouse and write down only the moments where attention drops.
